For september, Julien Gillain takes the lead!

 

 

Julien Gillain is a pianist and violinist who recently graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in both instruments. He has the privilege to be part of numerous projects with diverse styles. During the month of September, he will bring forward some of them at the Music Village. As much on the piano as on the violin, from tradition to modern jazz, for some projects mingling with cuban music or even baroque music, Julien will offer a month of September punctuated with varied and colorful ensembles.

Loumèn WINNER of the MuziekMozaik Jazz contest 2017, comes to the Music Village for an exceptional concert to present you, in preview, her new album in French, which will be  released in spring 2018. In her music, she resumes to themes that are dear to her: everyday life, love, life and self-esteem... The Botanique and the Ancienne Belgique already appreciated  her sensual and deep voice in English and we definitely fall for her lyrics & interpretation in the language of Molière! The love for Hardbop and tradition has brought together these young musicians in a project proposing both arrangements from famous bands from that era and personal compositions.

After playing for four years together, they now tend to explore a more modern jazz, influenced by musicians like Jimmy Greene or Walter Smith III but still deeply immersed in the roots of tradition. It is with deep complicity and a pleasure to play together that reveal their own universe to the audience.

RHG Project is a latin jazz fusion group that mixes some of the native rhythms of cuban music (such as Danzon, Chachacha, Son Montuno and Songo ) with the current trends of modern jazz. This new project brings together some European and Cuban musicians with different backgrounds, thus creating its own distinct sound. Its repertoire features compositions by Rubén Hernandez and standards (arranged) of some of the most important composers in the history of jazz, like Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Richie Beirach. The aim of the band is to give continuity  to tradition and, at the same time, to contribute to its evolution, passing a message through music, a message of freedom, hope and love.

KIRK LIGHTSEY (pianist, bandleader) was born February 15, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan. Influenced by Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan and as a teen Barry Harris, Lightsey’s early career started out as sideman for R&B acts and Motown recordings. His first jazz recordings as sideman were with Chet Baker, whom he also appeared with on one of Baker’s final performances. Pianist of immense accomplishment and versatility who worked with scores of major jazz stars, including Yusef Lateef, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Harold Land, Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker, James Moody, Clifford Jordan, Benny Golson and Don Cherry.

This quartet that one may label as gypsy, formed by Julien Gillain alongside his brother, offers a fresh approach of the violin in a more swing and bop manner. Supported by the double bass timbre and the drums, they explore the diverse colours brought by the dialogue between all their instruments. Influenced by the music of Didier Lockwood, Stéphane Grappelli but also modern musicians, it is with a strong complicity and a constant exchange that they revisit various standards from the Jazz tradition as well as some original tunes.

This eight musicians « ensemble » featuring a jazz quartet and a string quartet, proposes you a singular music. Trumpet player and leader Pauline Leblond, blends her two passions in her compositions; i.e. baroque music and jazz. From swing to improvisation she proposes a mixture inspired by great composers for string quartets (Debussy, Ravel, Shostakovitch, Bartok…) and baroque composers (Bach, Corelli, Pergolesi, Haendel…). This double quartet will thus take you on a colorful and versatile musical journey!

Shanna Waterstown was born in the Deep South in the USA. She grew up singing Gospel in a small Baptist church, at a time when the most popular music on the radio and in her household was "Motown Soul", "Country" and "Funk". Shanna then moved to New York City where she was in the dance class, theater club and the school Choral. She was also inspired to join a theater group that performed small off-Broadway Musical shows. Barely out of high school she made a trip to Paris France and signed with a French cabaret where she performed for several years. She toured all over the USA., France and Europe rising in her career as a major American artist here. While in Europe she has had the privilege of opening for James Brown, Buddy Guy ,Louisiana Red, Mud Morganfield and Maceo Parker just to name a few. To Discover !

Swedish jazz vocalist CajsaZerhouni recently released the album “My Billie” – an homage to Billie Holiday with a personal selection of songs from the legend’s repertoire. “I wanted to record this album because of the love I had for certain recordings that had stayed with me since my early youth.” CajsaZerhouni and her band led by guitarist Alexander Brotthonor, pay tribute to Billie Holiday as the great improviser she was. The approach is traditional, but the interpretation and arrangements give the music a very personal sound. Presence, feeling, beautiful phrasing and a warm, sweet sound are characteristics of CajsaZerhouni’s singing. She is regularly featured at Stockholm’s jazz venues, and working with many of Sweden’s finest jazz artists.

Angelo Gregorio is a very active Brussels jazz saxophonist and on this occasion will present his trio and new album "Ceci n'est pas a trio". By the name "Ceci n'est pas a trio" Angelo wants to pay homage to the country that welcomed him ten years ago, Belgium, referring to Magritte's surrealism. At the heart of this trio is the passion for the great era of New Orleans and Swing, which began with the first jazz records of ODJB in 1917 till the swing of the great orchestras of the 40s. Angelo and his fellow musicians in addition to the high musical level, have a desire. Show the audience that music, in this case jazz, is in perennial connection with other arts, and draws, interprets and re-elaborates facts, values, ancient and current traditions. Definitely a jazz trio that will swing you out of your chair!

Marie Kruttli started playing classical piano when she was 6 and turned later on towards jazz. Throughout her young career, this young artist collected numerous prizes; the Friedlwald scholarship, 1st prize  at the piano competition of Langnau Jazz nights, the ZKB Jazz prize, and was recently elected “coup de Coeur” by Berne’s canton. Based in Brussels, Blue Bossa Liberté is a Brazilian Fusion band. Their repertoire consists mainly of personal compositions inspired by the Bossa Nova, jazz harmonies and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. They also play some original arrangements of pearls of Brazilian music coming from composers such as Tom Jobim, HermetoPascoal, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso ... The group has been selected as a promising group of talent by the project Ça Balance 2016 / 2017- Fédération Wallonie - Bruxelles!  They have just released their second album – Monstros Tetraterriepelaticais

Born and raised in the USA, Paul Brown belongs to the most talented soul singers of his generation. His musical career started at seven when he learned to play the guitar. Inspired by great Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, Paul began to develop a deep passion for real expressive black music and soon became serious about his own vocals. Early on, he moved to New York City where he was very soon recognized as an exceptionally-gifted vocalist by the entire profession. Over the years he learned to play a variety of instruments, developed his skills as a songwriter and eventually produced his own songs. At the same time he worked with and recorded for artists like Roberta Flack, Frank McComb, Tracy Bonham, Lauryn Hill, Lalah Hathaway and many more. After the success of ‘Miles!’, ‘Louis!’ and ‘I’m a Soulman’, The Legends and singer/host/trumpet player Michael Varekamp present a new show about the life of Billie Holiday and other divas of the previous century’s glory time of jazz and soul. During the 1920s, a show business full of girl power flourishes. With magical talents, women run nightclubs, travel in their own trains and lead their very own big bands like true CEOs. These women are strong and independent, though not rarely their lives have a tragic edge, as in the background they’re accompanied by mysterious and even destructive men. In ‘Billie in Concert!’, the young singing sensation Amory Berkenveld steps into the shoes of Billie Holiday. After being well noticed while sharing the stage with iconic figures as Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley or the Wu-Tang Clan, The Lehmanns Brothers toured France, starting from Angoulême, until they were given the opportunity to cross the borders on the occasion of the Montreux Jazz Festival. Each show is a  celebration placed under the saint patron : Groove. Using subtle jazz melodies, funk from the 70s, a nice touch of hip-hop and neo-soul blended with some house music, they appear on stage like a wild fire, with a strong ambition of making the crowd dance. With Prince, Snarky Puppy, Earth Wind and Fire or Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles as some of their influences, The Lehmanns Brothers dig their groove with an incredible maturity.

Jazz band – 14 musicians - performing pieces by Glenn Miller, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Norah Jones and more.

The Lingfield College Jazz Band consists of fifteen talented musicians and music scholars aged from 12 to 18 years old. The band performs a repertoire of both 'standard' Swing Jazz such as Duke Ellington, and Glenn Miller numbers,  to more funk jazz by Herbie Hancock. Aside from performing regularly within their own school concerts and headlining Jazz Concerts, the band has built up a reputation in its local area of Surrey and Sussex in the South of England, entertaining and performing to large audiences at venues such Lingfield Park Racecourse and Blindley Heath Country Fair.

 

Chamber Choir – 17 singers - performing songs by Bob Chilcott, John Rutter and Paul McCartney to name a few

 

The Lingfield College Chamber Choir was formed in January 2014 and consists of seventeen pupils from ages 12 to 18 years old who all have a passion for singing. The choir performs a mixed repertoire of sacred and secular music, from beautiful Irish folk standards through to choral arrangements of current 'popular' contemporary hits. The choir has competed in county choral competitions gaining great praise, as well as regularly being invited to sing in churches within our local area.

The Morning call jazz band was born in  Brussels in September 2017. They love to share their passion for swing inspired by composers and musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington... They now work hand in hand with swing dancers. They just toured for more than a month working and arranging a new set where they all sing in Barber Shop Style (Miles Brothers). Jean-Yves Jung, Parisian organist is, among many other projects, a long-time member of Gipsy guitar great Birelli Lagrene's quartet. Jean-Yves and Belgium's most international guitarist Jeanfrançois Prins met in Berlin where they performed together in 2014 at the EUNIC Jazz Festival. For their third performance together at the Music Village, they decided to pay an energetic and inventive tribute to two masters of Hardbop, this jazz style from the 60's, full of Blues and Soul: Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. With the amazing Bruno Castellucci on drums, they will share a repertoire full of groove, swinging melodies, and where virtuosity never overshadows their sense of humor, lyricism and interaction.

New York trumpeter John Marshall has worked and recorded since the 1970’s with many jazz greats including Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Ornette Coleman, and Dizzy Gillespie. After being a soloist in the WDR Big Band, Germany, for the last 25 years, while touring and recording in New York and around the world with his bands and releasing twelve CDs as a leader and many more as a featured guest, John is now back to a full-time freelance gigging and touring schedule. Catch him here in a rare Brussels performance, teaming up with Jeanfrançois Prins’ Belgian all stars trio, paying a musical tribute to the Bebop and Cool Jazz greats - book early!

Hosted by the Pete Churchill Trio,This evening will be a chance to hear the best of the new, up and coming Jazz Singers as found amongst the students at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. Professor of Jazz Singing, Pete Churchill was accompanist to the great Mark Murphy for fifteen years and in his long career as a pianist, singer, choral director and conductor, he has also worked with Jon Hendricks, Sheila Jordan, Norma Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Abdullah Ibrahim and many more. This evening is a chance to hear the Jazz Singers of tomorrow in the capable hands of a master accompanist.

The Ladies of Company B is a sweet snapshot of Company B Jazz Band, based out of Vancouver, Canada.  Inspired by the music of the legendary Andrews and Boswell Sisters, the all-female group features a harmonizing vocal trio in authentic Swing Era style.  The vocalists also playing trumpet, ukulele, and percussion, and upright bass completes the quartet.  In matching '30s attire, they charm the hearts of audiences from all walks of life.

The band enjoys a great diversity of listeners internationally, and in their 11 years together have performed in renowned venues and festivals across Canada, the United States, Europe and China.  In both New Orleans and Jiangsu Province, Company B was the sole representative of Canadian musical talent.  The band released their 5th album December, 2017,  and are set to release an album of all-original material in 2019. Filippo Bianchini is one of the new voices of the tenor saxophone. He has just finished recording his new cd, the third with the Belgian Label “September”. The repertoire of this evening will be a mix of compositions from his albums, especially the latest which focuses on the music of Salvatore Adamo in jazz. Bianchini will be supported by a fantastic rhythm section, the double bass player Spallati from Berlin and the piano player Sanna from Rome.
