TRIBUTE TO MONK

CARTE BLANCHE TO THEO ZIPPER

Aristide d'Agostino (trumpet), Abel Jednak (sax), Yannick Jacquet (piano), Lucas Vanderputten (drums), Théo Zipper (bass & arrangements)

Playing the music of one of his hero is not an easy job, especially when this hero developed a super-personal and unique sound than no one was able to reach better than him. Thelonious Monk was a revolutionary composer, and pianist. He left us a large corpus of brillant and beautiful tunes, all of these are short stories full of surprises, dissonance, which can sound like a strange joke as well as a life celebration.  Théo Zipper uses his favorite 10 tunes of Monk as a playground for his quintet. Trying to follow the spirit of the master, and to add his own experience into it.

MICHEL MAINIL – VINCENT ROMAIN QUINTET

SOUL VOYAGE

Vincent Romain (guitar), Michel Mainil (sax), Maxime Moyaerts (organ), Olivier Poumay (harmonica), Antoine Cirri (drums)

Today, the jazz fan can look back on one hundred years of jazz history, the first recordings reaching back to 1917 with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. In jazz, some enjoy and some play, giving into creative re-exploration, a movement that began in the 80’s with the neo-boppers.  Here, the five members of Soul Voyage opted for a certain simplicity, avoiding the acrobatic melodies of be-bop. Soul jazz, as they see it, looked for the freshness and efficiency found in gospel and blues as opposed to the hard-bop of the fifties. Its greatest period, from 1960 until 1975, featured such musicians as the Hammond B3 king Jimmy Smith, Horace Silver, Lonnie Liston Smith, Lou Donaldson, John Patton, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Grant Green and the Adderley brothers among others.

By the name "Ceci n'est pas a trio" Angelo wants to pay homage to the country that welcomed him ten years ago, Belgium, referring to Magritte's surrealism. At the heart of this trio is the passion for the great era of New Orleans and Swing, which began with the first jazz records of ODJB in 1917 till the swing of the great orchestras of the 40s. Angelo and his fellow musicians, in addition to the high musical level, have a desire: showing the audience that jazz is in perennial connection with other arts, and draws, interprets and re-elaborates facts, values, ancient and current traditions. LEO SIDRAN

“THE MUSIC OF MICHAEL FRANKS”

Leo Sidran (guitar, voicals), Max Darmon (bass), Romain Bouiges (drums), Paul Sany (piano)

Just like Adam Cohen, Nancy Sinatra, Jakob Dylan ou Norah Jones, Leo Sidran is not just the son of Ben Sidran. He is also an extraordinary artist on his own. Songwriter, composer, talented interpret, mult-instrumentalist, director and producer. Cool School [The Music of Michael Franks] is his fifth studio album. The result is astonishing : his voice is surprisingly similar to that of Michael Franks and thus matches perfectly the unique atmospheres and ambiances that lulled us during the 70ies and 80ies. Between jazz, bossa nova, sophisticated pop folk music, the result is a real delight ! More info

“It was a satisfying but strange feeling…to hear a new young voice make some exhilarating and

thoughtful solos in the spaces I used to occupy in those pieces.”

Award-winning jazz pianist-composer Tamir Hendelman is known for his powerful sense of swing, inventive arranging and work with some of the world’s great singers, from Natalie Cole to Barbra Streisand, Roberta Gambarini to Barbara Morrison.  He has been leading his own trio and performing with the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra since 2000-2001.  He is known for his imaginative arranging of standards and his playing on recordings of Graham Dechter, Richard Galliano and more.
