VIA TOLEDO JAZZ QUARTET

TOP JAZZ QUARTET

Angelo Gregorio (sax/compositions), Paolo Loveri (guitar), Fil Caporali (bass), Bruno Castellucci (drums)

Via Toledo is an ancient street and one of the most important shopping thoroughfare in the city of Naples, Italy. Many poets compare Via Toledo to the American Broadway and the french writer Stendhal who described the spirit of this street like this “here we are in the beautiful Via Toledo, the happiest street on earth!”. These four musicians, Bruno Castellucci (Belgian from Italian Parents), Paolo Loveri, Angelo Gregorio (Italians from the region of Naples) and Fil Caporali (Brazilian) got together with the same spirit of Via Toledo in Naples. Happiness and passion for music, for jazz. This project wants to present a unique kind of jazz musical performance bringing together original compositions of the young upcoming artist Angelo Gregorio and less known jazz standards.

JEANFRANÇOIS PRINS

"RIO DE JAZZEIRO"

Jeanfrançois Prins (guitar, vocals), Theo de Jong (bass), Bruno Castellucci (drums) & guest : Jasper Soffers (piano, keyboards)

Come and celebrate life with Jazz and Brazilian Music! Rio de Jazzeiro combines the joy and sensuality of Brazilian music with the positive energy of melodic jazz. Belgian jazz guitarist Jeanfrançois Prins (based in Berlin and NYC for many years) has performed all over Europe, the Americas and even Asia. Exposed to so many styles and influences, and inspired by musicians he’s met and worked with, he created a new theme: “Rio de Jazzeiro”. Much of Prins’ favorite music originated in Brazil, and his idea was to present Brazilian music with a jazzman’s taste. From Bossa Nova to Samba, from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Tania Maria and Caetano Veloso, and including jazz repertoire as well as originals, Prins, supported by his Belgian all-stars rhythm section Bart Denolf and maestro Bruno Castellucci, with Dutch piano virtuoso Jasper Soffers as a guest, will generate joyful energy, deep grooves, and lyrical ballads.

JOACHIM CAFFONNETTE TRIO

TOP JAZZ

Joachim Caffonnette (piano), Alex Gilson (bass), Jean-Baptiste Pinet (drums)

After years focusing on his quintet, making his  band become one the most important iones on the young Brussels jazz scene, Joachim Caffonnette met double bass player Alex Gilson, freshly arrived in Brussels. Together, they did several gigs in trio with local drummers, having fun on jazz standards. They decided to organise a mini tour in Belgium and Eastern France. Gilson called Paris-based drummer, Jean-Baptiste Pinet for the gigs. After the first notes, it appeared that the connection between the three musicians was almost telepathic, consolidated by a common vision of the interplay. Since then, they have been touring in Europe, mixing standards with Caffonnette’s originals and some pop-rock cover arranged by the band leader. Good moments ahead !

CARTE BLANCHE TO MARTIN SALEMI

Martin Salemi was born in Brussels in 1988. His parents are both artists. His father, who plays the guitar, initiated him to music at a very early age. He started learning the piano aged six and, in 2013, completed his jazz piano master’s degree with distinction at the Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel.

Martin is interested in all types of music and in various piano styles and, in addition to jazz piano, he has had the opportunity to experience classical as well as salsa, funk, pop and rock music.

Very early on, in addition to his instrumental work, he developed an interest for composition. He started recording albums very young – first cassettes, then CDs – which he shared with family and friends.

Martin is currently involved in two personal projects. OPMOC, which has already recorded three albums and has toured internationally several times, and the Martin Salemi Trio, which released its first album in 2017 under the Igloo Records label.

The Orchestra Italiana Bruxelles (OIB) is the Italian Jazz Big Band of Brussels founded in 2013 from the idea of Maestro Angelo Gregorio. The heart and core of OIB’s repertoire is the passion of the Maestro for this historical moment of the Italian Music that he calls the “Golden Era”. This period goes from 1930 until 1970 and represents one of the most productive moments for “Il Bel Paese” in terms of songs and beautiful melodies that will become well known all over the world. It’s about songs such as Nel blu dipinto di blu, Parole Parole, Buonasera Signorina, Estate, Voglio Vivere Cosi and many others.

Another significant aspect that makes their repertoire very interesting and in tune with the times is the fact that the Orchestra is composed not only of Italians but also of musicians of other nationalities such as French, Belgian, Portuguese, Cuban and Uruguayan. This multicultural environment enriches the entire OIB’s repertoire by introducing a new key that is poured into the solos of every single musician and again in the whole orchestra that through the music and the cultural differences of its performers succeeds in creating the union in diversity.

Pepa Niebla is a well known Spanish singer currently based in Brussels. After studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with David Linx, Stephane Galland among others, her voice has appeared on countless occasions in the belgian jazz landscape : collaboration, live, radio, or discography publications... Surrounded by a top Belgian and European rhythm section, Pepa Niebla revisits jazz standards, known and unknown. The band’s dynamism offers a new approach to the old standards with original arrangements and some personal compositions. Definitely a new voice of young belgian jazz ! To discover.
